Our teeth are one of the most important parts of our body and one of the most ignored when it comes to proper care. The teeth go through a lot when we eat or drink something. Giving proper care to the teeth will ensure their continued health and lessen the chances of tooth decay.

Tooth decay occurs when food gets stuck in our teeth. The bacteria present in the mouth digest the food, turning it into acid. This acid along with the remaining food particles and saliva forms plaque, which is instrumental in dissolving the enamel covering of the teeth, leading to tooth decay.

Here are 5 daily practices that will help you prevent tooth decay and ensure good dental health:

  1. Brushing: Brushing your teeth at least twice a day will ensure continual dental health. Brushing the teeth helps remove the food particles and fluids that stick to the teeth after you eat or drink something as they cause tooth decay in the long run. Brushing the teeth at night before sleeping, after an hour of having a meal, is especially beneficial. However, don’t brush your teeth immediately after a meal as it could lead to further damage. Try spending at least 2 minutes brushing your teeth.
  2. Flossing: Brushing the teeth does not always clear away the food debris stuck in the mouth. This is where flossing comes in. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles stuck between the teeth and under the gum line, places where the toothbrush cannot reach. Try flossing at least once a day. The ideal time to floss is before or after you brush your teeth before going to sleep.
  3. Rinsing/Mouthwash – Rinsing your mouth regularly after meals help clear food debris stuck in the mouth. Adopt this practice as a ritual to be done after every meal. Using mouthwash that contains fluoride also helps in maintaining teeth help and preventing tooth decay. However, don’t mouthwash directly after brushing your teeth. You can do it once a day after lunch.
  4. Limit foods with Carbohydrates – Limit the consumption of sugary snacks, drinks, and bread based foods. Basically, anything that tends to get stuck in the mouth. After having sugary drinks or snacks that get stuck in the mouth, it is always advisable to brush your teeth and floss so that nothing remains stuck between or on the teeth. Eat fruits between meals if you feel the need to snack.
  5. Don’t Ignore A Toothache – If you experience a toothache, fix an appointment with the dentist as it could be a sign of tooth decay due to cavity formation. Schedule regular appointments with your dentist for teeth health checkups and teeth cleaning for keeping the plaque away.
